Reviewer: M Forrester-Barker from Bangor, Gwynedd United Kingdom

Of the pieces on this CD, the two by Rodrigo (Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre) are for guitar and orchestra, while the rest are for solo guitar. Being familiar with the Miles Davis version of the adagio from Concierto de Aranjuez, it was strange hearing it in the original guitar version. All in all, this is a very pleasant CD, offering just over an hour of good music at a bargain price. The recordings were made in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but the sound quality is very good throughout. Amusingly, the guitar pictured on the cover is a steel-strung instrument, not a classical guitar as used on the recording.

With its first CD, Aurora, the 45-strong girls' choir Cantamus moves away from the traditional repertoire into New Age/classical crossover territory for nine luxuriant pieces by film composer Sarah Class. Class has worked with Zbigniew Requiem for My Friend Preisner and his influence shows in the sometimes detached, often rapturous quality of her choral writing.

Spanish Dance Troupe

click here to return to the top of the pageFor too long, every Gorky's album was heralded by an expectant British press as the one that would finally break this fresh-faced band of proto-mediaeval avant-garde prog-folk outsiders to a mainstream audience. Not to be, though-
-Spanish Dance Troupe is a come-back album from the wilderness, after Gorky's were unceremoniously dumped by their major label paymasters Mercury.
