Iīd like to say welcome to the Spring weather but it is still
struggling here to stay warm. Easter is just around the
corner and therefore school holidays. Us Mumīs are madly
trying to arrange for offspring to play/stay at friends
houses whenever possible. There is something to be said for
the extended family situation still in force in the villages
around here which helps at these times. Our son usually stays
for school lunches but last week I had to collect him for a
dental appointment. Of the dozen or so adults waiting at the
school gates at least half were grandparents. As I write this
my father is under the knife having a new hip replacement.
Maybe when he has recovered he would like to come and
recuperate over here and take on Spanish abuelo status? Just
a thought! Until then Iīll just say "Get Well Soon" to him.
This month I bring you a report about cordon bleu cooking in
your own home. Read about the service Jenny Flew provides
something I could well get used to. Plus the fabulous
International Womenīs Day event which took place at the
Marriott Hotel, Denia on March 8th. Such a buzz throughout
the day that it is the most talked about event for miles
around. The Women in Business Club pulled out all the stops
and produced a truly amazing event. Although all the
businesses within the trade exhibition were run by women
anyone could attend. Over 3000 visitors came, saw and
enjoyed. Now big businesses are clamouring to be involved in
next years event. Even guys were trying to book tables.
We have new businesses on the site including an e-book about
moving to Spain "The Business of Living in Mediterranean
Spain" and the re-entry of Home 2 Home Removals. Over the
next few weeks we have more joining us including theatre
schools, restaurants and boutiques to name just a few so keep
your eyes peeled. So for now have fun and look forward to
e-seeing you soon.
Besitos,
Suzanna.

2) Suzanna's Article
International Womenīs Day 2005
In August of last year the Women in Business Club Spain sent
out their first press release to all women in the area,
inviting them to join in the International Womenīs Day
celebrations they were planning for 2005. It was the first of
its kind in the area and no one had any idea how popular and
successful the event would eventually be.
It took weeks of preparation and organisation the same as any
trade exhibition does but no one can market or produce the
excitement, vivacity and thrill that the actual day ended up.
It was definately a WOW event which will leave people talking
about it for a very long time to come.
It was realised soon after the initial idea was formed that
the Casa de Cultura in Javea, where the Women in Business
Club usually hold their fundraising events, was too small.
The Marriott Hotel in Denia were willing to open their
ballroom and foyers to house the event. Once this was
decided then came the effort and organisational skills of an
exceptional group of women. By the final run up 118 trade
stands were booked from lawyers to banks, from computer
wizards to party planning. Alongside was a whole host of arts
and crafts plus health and beauty. To liven the day an 8 hour
interactive stage extravaganza was run within the ballroom.
Talks, dancing, singing, fashion shows and makeovers were all
being performed intersperced with hourly raffles.
An estimated 3000 plus visitors enjoyed the day and new
friendships and business contacts were made throughout. The
doors opened to the public at 12pm and at 12.30 the Opening
Ceremony was held with Ana Vasbinder, councillor for Javea,
Carlos Garcia, communiactions and marketing manager for the
Marriott Hotel and Beverly Stewart from OCI radio, Altea.
Each said a few words and Candy, Sally and Suzanna, WIBC
members, presented Ana Vasbinder with a cheque for 3,000
Euros to be donated to the Womenīs Shelter and Womenīs
Workshop in Javea. Three candles were lit on stage, the 1st
represented victims of the Atocha, Madrid bombings, just 3
days from their 1st anniversary, the 2nd for the victims of
the Tsunami disaster and the 3rd for all Women worldwide.
The WIBC has been fundraising for the Javea Womenīs Shelter
and Workshop since September of last year and so far has
handed over a total of 5,000 Euros. On March 8th,
International Womenīs Day 2005 a further 4000 Euros in Cash
for the Shelter plus a 2000 Euro Donation from Round-Town
Charity Shop - that will go to purchase computers for the
Women's Workshop Centre was collected. Pretty impressive
stuff. Throughout the day various dignitories arrived from
the teniente de la Guardia Civil, Javea - Veronica Guillén to
the British Consul, Russell Thomson. Mr Thomson took time out
to announce the problem here of domestic violence and the
work him and his team at the Consulate do to help victims. He
was impressed with the whole event and wished everyone luck.
Unfortunately domestic violence is a great problem here and
central government are spending a lot of time, effort and
money to try to educate and hopefully eradicate the crime. So
closer to home the WIBC will carry on doing their bit to help
with ongoing fundraisers for the Javea Womenīs shelter.
The director and events manager of the WIBC are now setting
up meetings with Ana Vasbinder to see how to help in more
and better ways. To find out more about the WIBC and see
pictures and read comments about past fundraisers and
International Womenīs Day go to www.wibc-spain.com.
Back in November I won a raffle prize donated by Jenny Flew.
This was quite an unusual prize in that it was for Jenny to
come to our house, meet with our guests and cook with my
ingredients for approxiamately four hours. Jenny is a Cordon
Bleu Chef who has taught in the Constance Spry Cookery
School, London, been on the tasting and marketing boards
for Sainsburys and the such like. She also had her own very
successful catering company in the UK and has chefed around
the world from restaurants to yachts.
To me it was sheer decadence to have my own chef for the
evening. First we had to decide on the guests then the menu.
Well as my parentīs hadnīt been able to manage the usual
Christmas visit they were the obvious choice as guests. As
for menu we wanted something different. Our final decision
presented itself as the following menu:
Canapes - Tuna Slivers & Fillets of Red Mullet
- Provence Style
Saute of Monkfish Fillet with Salsa Verde Provencal
Mignons of Venison Loin with Agrodolce Sauce, Puree of
Celeriac & Potato and French Beans
Casserole of Venison and Beef in a Traditional British Sauce,
Puree of celeria & potato with celeriac, braised red cabbage
and Brocolli Florettes
Glittered Torte au Chocolate with Pears in Star Anis
Very satisfying I can tell you - plus we even had some "left
over venison" (a family joke!) And on that note, if you are
interested in buying venison not all butchers here can sell
it. They have to have, I am told, a special "game" license.
Luckily our local butcher "Galan" is very famous and supplies
many restaurants as well as having an amazing array of fresh
meat on offer to the public. A speciality of theirs are the
"embutidos artesanos" which are the cured sausages. Literally
hanging from the roof beams on canes, two stories above the
centre of the shop are rows and rows of salamis, butifaros
and chorizos to name just a few. The shop is worth a visit
just to look and taste a selection of their sausages which
they have available along with the obligatory red wine on the
counter top.
I ordered the venison in advance anyway and took Jenny with
me to select the beef and check the venison. She was in her
element! Personally I really canīt get excited about bits of
meat regardless of quality and price - (now a pair of shoes)
but I have to hand it to her the meat was perfect.
Attention to detail was certainly part of the evening and
Jenny even turned up with a flower table decoration to match
my dining room. Jenny also cleared up the kitchen leaving it
spotless. I could certainly get used to the high life!!
Until then though itīs back to the usual home cooking - sorry
hubby, and thank goodness for the dishwasher!
Jenny does this service professionally in and around the
Javea area. Her normal fee is 80 Euros plus the cost of the
food required. There is a nominal fee for petrol if you live
some distance from Javea, and to cover the printing costs of
recipes and telephone calls.
You can also hear Jenny Flew on Sunshine FM cookery hour chat
show and OCI Radio with Beverly - Cooking on the Costa and
also the C B Friday Cookery Pages with Juliette Allaway.
Her aim is simple, she says "The idea is that we will cook
healthy dishes that fit in with any diet that you wish to
follow and talk about ways to make your diet interesting,
enjoyable and easy. Your friends will benefit too from the
information I can give to help make many dishes less
fattening and lower in calories."
