1) Editorial
Hi !
Hi, hope all is well. Welcome to another edition of the
Costa Blanca Net Guide´s newsletter. You may have noticed
that we are sending you news and articles more often. This
will be our aim in the future to keep you up to date not
only with what´s going on here on the Costa Blanca but
further afield too.
October 9th was "Valencia Day" which meant a day of fiestas.
October 12th was a National fiesta therefore many schools
and businesses extended their holidays to make a "puente"
(bridge). Just like at Christmas time the panic buying at
the shops was in force. We spent the day with an old school
friend of mine and her family. We managed to get in touch
via the internet and met up finally after 20 years. It was
fun and relaxing and the children got on like a house on
fire.
In this month´s newsletter I have rounded up news about the
telephone scams, bogus gas men and the new strict
enforcement of the drink driving laws. Also read of the
sterling efforts of the Women in Business Club who are
raising funds and awareness of the Women´s Shelter and
Educational Workshops in Javea. You can find out more via
their website which is detailed in the newsletter.
So enjoy, hasta pronto!

2) Suzanna's Article
Hello ,
I am pleased to say that the telephone scam has had much
media coverage since I first announced it. I have had many
people contact me to say they have had similar experiences.
One lady was very upset as she was actually waiting for a
parcel from the UK so assumed it was correct information.
Back in August I used a well known courier service here,
Seur, and their effiency was astounding and I must say they
never ever kept me on the telephone which is hardly
surprising as they would lose business in the future not
gain it. Be aware that these companies use various phone
numbers not just the one I was given.
On a similar note people who live here will probably be
aware of the bogus gas men. Just last week we had a knock at
the door from a blue shirted official looking guy. He had
the obligotory clipboard and even a "identity card". You do
not have to let these people into your house! If you want to
have your gas appliances and tubing checked you can call
your local butano (gas) office and make an appointment. When
I explained to this guy that all our appliances and tubing
were in order he was none too pleased and tried to convince
me to let him in.
Further to the new driving laws I told you about a few
editions ago, from October 1st the drink driving laws are
now to be very vigorously enforced. Beware that a 6 month
jail sentence will be passed for those found in the wrong.
Gone are the days of newspaper warnings of when and where
the police would be holding breathalyser tests. With more
traffic and faster cars it can only be a good thing.

3) Women in Business
As reported in last months newsletter the Women in Business
started their series of fundraisers in September in aid of
the Javea Women´s Shelter and Workshops. The first went
extremely well and professionally run despite some technical
hitches behind the scenes. Georgina Cronin delivered an
inspiring speech about her journey from obesity to her now
elegent self. She was truly a model persona in every way.
She happily signed editions of her book at the end of the
evening and was happy to give encouraging tips and
guidelines to many people.Georgina donated 5 Euros from each
sale of her book on the evening. If you missed the WIBC
fundraiser - but would still like to buy the book - of which
5 Euros will be donated to the fundraising efforts simply go
to http://palomera.com/WIBC/event-Cronin.htm.
Following on from the September´s fundraiser the Women in
Business are now hard at work on their next fundraiser. On
Tuesday 26th October at 7pm held at the Javea Casa de
Cultura there will be a "Night of Natural Health". With
speakers and demonstrators of Acupunture, Reflexology,
Empowerment and Hypnotherapy it should be a very interesting
evening. Tickets are 10 Euros each and to find out more keep
your eye on the Women in Business website
http://palomera.com/WIBC/index.htm
These fundraisers as I say are to raise money for the Javea
Women´s Shelter and Workshops. Karla, the director of Women
in Business sent me the following information about the
shelter:-
ABOUT JAVEA WOMEN'S SHELTER
Javea Women's Shelter has been in existence for four years.
It is a Shelter or Safe House for all women and children in
the Javea area who are victims of domestic violence. The
Javea Social Services department and the Javea Police
department initiated the Shelter in order to help the many
women and children who were in need of safety. The Shelter
provides pro-active solutions for women who find themselves
and their children threatened by domestic violence. Both the
police and the social services departments take swift action
to remove the victims from their homes and take them to the
Shelter, which is located in a secret place and guarded with
security. Then a lawyer is appointed to the victim in order
to sort out what is needed to clarify and legalize the
domestic situation. Sometimes, there is a need for a
divorce, custody of the children and secured monies and
pensions. During their stay at the Shelter, the victims are
entitled to psychiatric counselling. Next, the police are
sent to the victim's home in order to remove the violent
perpetrator. After two to three weeks, the woman and her
children are moved back into the cleared domestic home and
monitored by social services. It is an energetic program
that has become a much-needed solution to aid the rising
numbers of domestic violence situations in Javea. Up to 20
women at a time per month, plus their children seek refuge
in the Shelter. Social services sites isolation and alcohol
to be the two most contributing factors to the occurrence of
domestic violence. However, in general, language barriers
are the number one cause of all disputes in the region.
