A Look at Torrevieja (in the South of Alicante, Costa Blanca) and Villajoyosa (Chocolate Heaven)

A look at Torrevieja

Torrevieja is situated to the south of Alicante. There you can find Torrevieja and La Mata Lagoons (the first is approximately 1400 hectares in size and the second one 700 hectares). In both lagoons there is huge natural salt extraction, the main industry of Torrevieja, and if you visit the area you will see the huge white mountains of extracted salt alongside the main national road.

Nowadays both lagoons are protected by the government and they have been converted into a Natural Park. The origins of Torrevieja begin from the early 18th Century. Torrevieja was originally named TORRE VIGIA, this is the name of the place where the soldiers were keeping the safe of the castle. Around 1759 a little settlement around this tower was formed by the local fishermen who had discovered the amazing quality and quantity of fish along this particular stretch of coast.

In 1829 there was a terrible earthquake which destroyed the city and King Fernando VII made a nationwide charity collection to help restore the town. Nowadays Torrevieja is among the most popular tourist areas on the Costa Blanca. Its climate, beaches, gastronomy and of coure its people turn Torrevieja into a little eden in the Mare Nostrum shores.
