A look at Torrevieja Torrevieja is situated to the south of Alicante. There you can find Torrevieja and La Mata Lagoons (the first is approximately 1400 hectares in size and the second one 700 hectares). In both lagoons there is huge natural salt extraction, the main industry of Torrevieja, and if you visit the area you will see the huge white mountains of extracted salt alongside the main national road. Nowadays both lagoons are protected by the government and they have been converted into a Natural Park. The origins of Torrevieja begin from the early 18th Century. Torrevieja was originally named TORRE VIGIA, this is the name of the place where the soldiers were keeping the safe of the castle. Around 1759 a little settlement around this tower was formed by the local fishermen who had discovered the amazing quality and quantity of fish along this particular stretch of coast. In 1829 there was a terrible earthquake which destroyed the city and King Fernando VII made a nationwide charity collection to help restore the town. Nowadays Torrevieja is among the most popular tourist areas on the Costa Blanca. Its climate, beaches, gastronomy and of coure its people turn Torrevieja into a little eden in the Mare Nostrum shores. Villajoyosa - "Chocolate Heaven" In the town of Villajoyosa just a few kilometres from Benidorm you will find Valor chocolate factory and museum. Visiting a chocolate museum certainly makes a change from the norm and has a certain fun element if not calorific value if you are a chocolate fan! The museum houses a variety of original machines and tells the story of how Don Valeriano López Lloret started this now extremely successful business back in 1881 in the town of Villajoyosa. It still is a family run business and has certainly kept up with the times and technology. All the recipes are now programmed into computers therefore they believe the quality is always perfect and consistent. Valor have listed their range of products but virtual reality hasn't covered the taste and smell yet! Maybe one day in the future but until that day you will still need to actually go there to actually smell and taste the products.
